Kate Barnes

Kate Barnes is Senior Program Officer at the MacArthur Foundation where she supports grantmaking and collaborations that enable solutions to climate change. With a background in philanthropy, coastal systems, and climate solutions, she is dedicated on promoting healthy and resilient communities. Kate joined the MacArthur Foundation in 2007, building partnerships that supported fisheries-dependent communities in Indonesia, Madagascar, Cuba, and the Western Pacific to improve fisheries production and coastal resilience. In 2020 she shifted her focus to climate mitigation, working to advance clean energy solutions. Prior to joining the Foundation, Kate supported research in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago and received an ORISE fellowship to work at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Great Lakes restoration. Kate holds a master’s degree in Environmental Management from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Science from Smith College.
